News & Events News Winner of Paintings in Hospitals Card Competition We're delighted to announce the winning design of the inaugural Paintings in Hospitals Christmas card competition... Earlier this year, Paintings in Hospitals began our search for an artwork by an emerging artist to feature on one of our charity’s seasonal greetings cards. The winning artwork will be produced as a Christmas card and sold on the Paintings in Hospitals online shop to help to raise money for our work bringing the benefits of art and creativity to patients and care staff across the country. We received many wonderful entries from exceptionally talented artists. The winning artwork has now been selected by our panel of judges, which included Sandra Bruce-Gordon, Director & Chief Executive of Paintings in Hospitals; David Cleaton-Roberts, Senior Director at Cristea Roberts Gallery; and Tim Reeve, Deputy Director of the V&A. We’re delighted to announce that ‘Dreaming of a White Christmas’ by artist Alexandra Hon has been selected as our winning artwork. Alexandra Hon is a painter and printmaker based in the UK. She is best known for her images of elaborate interior spaces incorporated into various narratives, focusing on the complexities and conundrums of interpersonal relationships. Alexandra Hon, Dreaming of a White Christmas, 2020 Alexandra Hon said: “Dreaming of a White Christmas holds a special place in my heart as the image symbolises three things: my late mother's love for Japanese printmaking; her wish to travel to Kyoto; and her dream of experiencing a White Christmas, whilst she spent most of her life living in Malaysia. Hospitals around the world have gone through a massive ordeal in fighting Covid-19. Despite the overwhelming workload the NHS faced, their quality of care was never compromised during the last days of my father-in-law's life when he lost his battle with cancer on Boxing Day 2020. Contributing my artwork to benefit carers across the country is my way of showing appreciation for everything they've done.” Sandra Bruce-Gordon, Director & Chief Executive of Paintings in Hospitals, said: “I personally loved the inspiration for Alexandra’s artwork and the judging panel all agreed that this bold, unique design is an excellent fit for Paintings in Hospitals. Alexandra will receive a £500 cash prize and her card will soon be available for purchase on our online shop. Paintings in Hospitals really needs people’s support this year and by purchasing Alexandra’s card they’ll be helping us to continue our work to inspire better health and wellbeing for patients, carers and communities across the UK this Christmas.” To be notified of when Alexandra's card design goes on sale, ensure you're signed up to our newsletter below.
