Today is the first-ever national day dedicated to the benefits of arts in care homes. To celebrate Paintings in Hospitals is highlighting the benefits of its work in the lives of care home residents and staff nationwide.

To mark the inaugural National Day of Arts in Care Homes (Tuesday 24 September), Paintings in Hospitals is releasing a series of case studies demonstrating the broad benefits of our charity's work with care home residents and staff across the country.

National Day of Arts in Care Homes sees care homes, with support from galleries, museums, and arts organisations, throughout the country providing arts activities for care home residents and staff. The day is intended to be a special celebration of the existing creative work in care homes and to demonstrate just how important the arts are to great care.

At Paintings in Hospitals, we currently work with 21 care homes across the country, providing art activities and co-curated art displays to encourage reminiscence and communication. We offer the opportunity for care home residents and staff to learn a little more about art, to experiment with new art techniques and to voice their opinion on the types of art they want in their care spaces.

National Day of Arts in Care Homes is jointly funded by The Baring Foundation and The Rayne Foundation. David Cutler, Director of The Baring Foundation says:

“We believe that everyone has a right to participate in arts and culture right up to the end of their lives and wherever they live. Many care homes are becoming increasingly creative places, which is wonderful to see – but there’s room for much more!”

From our own experiences and evaluation, we know that Paintings in Hospitals' art activities and displays help to create a more familiar and welcoming environment and encourage reflection, reminiscence and relaxation for care home residents and staff.
