Our new touring exhibition will feature the works of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, one of Britain’s most significant 20th-century artists.

Earlier this year Paintings in Hospitals partnered with the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust and Imperial Health Charity seeking an emerging curator to develop a new hospital touring exhibition.

We’re very pleased to announce that emerging curator Briana Oliver has been selected to lead the project. Briana completed her MA in Design History at the Royal College of Art in 2016.

Briana’s proposed exhibition, Linear Meditations, will dive into the representations of water made by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham in her drawings, paintings and etchings between 1975-2002. Capturing water in a variety of forms, from glaciers to seascapes, the exhibition will explore the power of water to both calm and captivate.

Briana says:

“As a young museums professional, it's such an exciting opportunity to work with Paintings in Hospitals. We’ll be integrating mindfulness activities in our artwork labels, providing a tool people can use when experiencing difficult emotions and a resource to support their wellbeing. I hope this exhibition will create empowering and uplifting care spaces that inspire health and happiness for all.”

Linear Meditations will tour three healthcare spaces at Charing Cross Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital in 2018 and 2019. The exhibition will then be available for other hospitals to borrow from the end of 2019.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a talk given by Briana, a project blog here on the Paintings in Hospitals website, and a series of mindfulness activities, including mindful drawing, mindful listening and yoga.

Linear Mediations opens at Charing Cross Hospital on 14th November 2018.
