Paintings in Hospitals is delighted to announce that the leading artist Edmund de Waal has donated this year's Patrons Circle fundraising Edition.

Edmund de Waal is an artist who writes. Much of his work is about the contingency of memory: bringing particular histories of loss and exile into renewed life. Both his artistic and written practice have broken new ground through their critical engagement with the history and potential of ceramics, as well as with architecture, music, dance, and poetry. De Waal continually investigates themes of diaspora, memorial, materiality, and the colour white with his interventions and artworks made for diverse spaces and museums worldwide.

For this new edition, de Waal has created a series of 20 delicate unglazed porcelain tiles, embossed with his hand-written rendering of the Wallace Stevens poem Anecdote of the Jar, each hand-embellished with fragments of gold leaf. The combination of porcelain, gold-leaf, and poetic text lie at the heart of his practice and the charity is honoured to be able to offer the edition for sale. The full details are:

Edmund de Waal is an artist patron of Paintings in Hospitals. Every year, a leading international artist creates an edition especially for the charity to raise much-needed funding. To date, editions have included works by Michael Craig-Martin, Ian Davenport, and Bridget Riley. Previous supporters are given priority access to future editions.
