"Many of our patients wander the wards looking at the artworks; nurses use it as a tool for engaging patients. We chose pictures that might help the patients reminisce about their lives."

Our collection

The Paintings in Hospitals Loan Collection has been created to provide comfort and relief – helping patients, visitors and staff interact and better cope with their environment.

The collection contains over 4000 high quality works of art including drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures, textiles and digital pieces. Over 2,000 artists are represented in the collection including Joseph Albers, Gillian Ayres, Ian Davenport, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, John Hoyland, Elizabeth Blackadder, Mary Webb, Patrick Hughes, Marta Marcé and Quentin Blake.

We have carefully selected artworks that meet the unique needs of the healthcare environment – from bedsides to hallways, waiting rooms and foyers.

Any healthcare facility can borrow from our collection, using one of our four loan schemes. These schemes have been created to meet the needs of different types of patients, treatment and architectural settings. We subsidise the cost of borrowing artworks from our collection so it typically costs £45 per artwork per year.
