We'll celebrate Paintings in Hospitals' long history of championing homegrown talent and highlight the good health of contemporary painting in a new collaborative exhibition with the award-winning artists of Contemporary British Painting.

Contemporary Painting: In Good Health unites artworks from our unique art collection with those by members of artist-led organisation Contemporary British Painting. The exhibition will be hosted at the Menier Gallery during Creativity and Wellbeing Week 2017 (13-17 June).

Founded in 1959, our collection is the only art collection of its kind, with the sole purpose to inspire better health and wellbeing across the UK. Paintings in Hospitals has long taken pride in nurturing and supporting nascent painting talent. Some of the earliest artworks added to our collection were by then-emergent British painters such as Gillian Ayres, who has since become one of the leading abstract artists of her generation. Contemporary British Painting members represent some of the most exciting emerging and award-winning painting in the UK now.

The Contemporary Painting: In Good Health exhibition comments on the strength and vigour of British painting today. The 26 painters featured include: Basil Beattie, Ian Davenport, Mary Webb, Carol Rhodes, Cathy Lomax, Julian Trevelyan, Pen Dalton, Matthew Krishanu and Mandy Payne.

Robert Priseman of Contemporary British Painting said:

“We are truly delighted to be working with Paintings in Hospitals. Their collection is a working gem which holds masterpieces of modern British painting made readily available to all. As advocates for the broader benefits of visual culture, Paintings in Hospitals demonstrates daily how painting plugs into the profound human need to touch, feel and mediate emotion. Its rising relevance in the 21st Century is beautifully aligned with the resurgent growth of interest in vinyl records, knitting, film photography and unplugged music. In this new exhibition, we see how painting exhibits a universal desire to connect to the real in ways which enriches us all."
