Big Draw artworks go on display in Surrey

Following the success of our fundraising campaign, 2 large drawings by world-famous illustrators Posy Simmonds and Michael Foreman have recently been loaned to a hospital in Surrey.

The two drawings have been on display near the paediatric ward of the hospital for a few weeks and have already brought warmth and reassurance to young patients, their staff and carers. “It brightens up the place and it’s created a lot of interest; a lot of people have been making positive comments.” - Consultant Paediatrician at the hospital.

Paintings in Hospitals was gifted the drawings as part of a series by The Campaign for Drawing and has been fundraising since 2010 to have them framed and displayed in a healthcare setting. The two works, both measuring 2 meters high and 3 meters long, were created during live-drawing events at the annual Big Draw organised by the Campaign for Drawing. Paintings in Hospitals made them accessible to healthcare providers through the Children and Young People Scheme and had them framed to conservation standards thanks to the generous support of John Jones.

We have another six drawings awaiting framing and our fundraising campaign continues.

Christmas Card Appeal 2011

This year the charity invited York-based illustrator Emily Sutton to design a joyful, luxury Christmas card offered in packs of 5 for £5.

Our annual Christmas card appeal helps us to subsidise loans of artwork from our collection to healthcare sites nationally. Last year the generous support we received contributed to the display of 60 artworks across different facilities, benefiting an estimated 60,000 people. We hope to exceed that amount this year and bring joy and colour to ever more people visiting healthcare facilities across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

These cards are still available to purchase up until Christmas. Email your name, full address, contact telephone number and the amount of packs you would like to mail@paintingsinhospitals.org.uk.

Alternatively call Lara or Helena on 0207 407 3222.

Paintings in Hospitals art auction gains amazing support

Paintings in Hospitals has defied the current financial climate by selling 95% of the lot featured in its annual fundraising art auction at Bonhams New Bond Street, London.

Attended by over 100 supporters, the evening was a huge success, generating much needed funds to develop the charity’s Children and Young People Loan Scheme.

The auction featured works donated by some of the most wonderful artists working in Britain today, with many new supporters such as Julian Opie, Ana Maria Pacheco, Lisa Milroy and Joe Tilson, alongside committed Paintings in Hospitals supporters such as Bridget Riley and Ian Davenport.

The funds raised from this year’s art auction will help to develop the Children and Young People Loan Scheme. This loan scheme allows healthcare sites to borrow from a collection of artworks specifically selected with children and teenagers in mind. In 2010 the charity could only afford to offer this service to benefit younger patients in the London area. With the money raised from this year’s auction we intend to provide access to the scheme to all healthcare sites across the UK.

Paintings in Hospitals has worked with a group of young people from Tate Forum to develop its Children and Young People Loan Scheme.

Through this collaboration, the charity aimed to broaden the scope of its collection for young people. Within many healthcare sites 13-18 year olds are treated alongside much younger patients in environments that are often designed with the wellbeing of small children in mind. By providing access to artworks that appeal to this age group we hope to help healthcare facilities create more comforting and engaging environments for teenage patients and visitors.

Young people from Tate Forum chose a selection of 2D works for commission as well as animations and films from the Animate Projects’ catalogue. Animate Projects explores and champions artists’ animation, supporting the production, exhibition and development of this artistic field. Established in 1990, Animate Projects has commissioned over 90 innovative and challenging films by artists.
